Rationale
Walkable access to community destinations supports increased use of local amenities, enhances opportunities for regular physical activity, and promotes community engagement.
Strategy Requirements
Locate a minimum of 2 qualifying on-site non-residential uses within 1/2 mile or 800 meter walking distance from all regularly occupied buildings.
Qualifying non-residential uses are:
- areas of commerce
- civic and/or institutional buildings
- commercial buildings
Note: Open spaces such as a parks or plazas, do not qualify as non-residential uses for this strategy.
Design Certification
Submit all of the following:

- Annotated plan(s) or map(s) showing:
- all existing or planned residential buildings
- all existing or planned non-residential uses within the project boundary
- the distances between a minimum of 51% of all planned or existing residential buildings and community destinations
- A calculation detailing:
- the number of all existing or planned residential buildings
- the number of all existing or planned residential buildings within a qualifying distance to community destinations
- Annotated plan(s) or map(s) showing:
Note: The distance can be calculated by:
- identifying the farthest main entrance to a regularly occupied building(A) from a transit stop(B)
- marking the walking route and distance between (A) and (B) to demonstrate a maximum walking distance of no more than 1/2 mile (800 meters)
- marking all regularly occupied buildings that fall within the identified distance
Built Certification
Submit all of the following:
