Playgrounds and playscapes expand opportunities for children to engage in physical activity and social interaction, stimulating child development.
Strategy Requirements
Include playgrounds and/or playscapes in a minimum of one open space within the project boundary that:
- is free of charge to all regular occupants
- incorporates elements for a minimum of 2 of the following:
- creative or imaginative play
- cooperative play
- physical play
- is functional year-round
Alternative Compliance
Identify a qualifying playground/playscape within 1/2 mile or 800 meters walking distance of the project boundary.
Design Certification
Submit all of the following:
- Annotated map(s) or plan(s) showing one of the following:
- if provided on-site, the location of the qualifying playground/playscape located within the project boundary
- if not provided on-site, the distance between the qualifying playground/playscape and the project boundary (for Alternative Compliance only)
- Design drawings detailing the types of play facilitated by design and equipment
- An official or draft statement confirming that the playground will be open and accessible free of charge year-round
Built Certification
Submit all of the following:
- Annotated map(s) or plan(s) showing one of the following:
- if provided on-site, the location of the qualifying playground/playscape located within the project boundary
- if not provided on-site, the distance between the qualifying playground/playscape and the project boundary (for Alternative Compliance only)
- An annotated map or photographs of the following:
- the distance between the main building entrance and the playground (Alternative Compliance only)
- the required elements
- An official statement confirming that the playground will be open and accessible free of charge year-round
