Rationale
Practices to reduce the heat island effect result in cooler temperatures on-site and in the surrounding community, protecting against heat-related illnesses.
Strategy Requirements
Implement heat island mitigation practices on a minimum of 51% of all structures, open spaces, and paved infrastructure.
Qualifying heat island mitigation practices include:
- non-paved natural surfaces on pathway/walkways
- green roofs
- green walls
- high albedo surfaces on roofs & paved pathways, roadways, and parking areas
- reflective shading devices over paved areas
- vegetation coverage on roofs and paved pathways, roadways, and parking areas
- preservation or creation of green open space
- heat-resistant construction materials
Design Certification
Submit all of the following:
- Calculations detailing the following:
- the number of all structures, open spaces, and paved infrastructure
- the number of areas where qualifying heat island mitigation practices will be implemented
- Annotated map(s) or plan(s) detailing all areas of the project where qualifying heat island mitigation practices will be implemented
- Design drawings detailing each unique qualifying heat island mitigation practice that will be used on site
Built Certification
Submit all of the following:
- Calculations detailing the following:
- the number of all structures, open spaces, and paved infrastructure
- the number of areas where qualifying heat island mitigation practices will be implemented
- Annotated map(s) or plan(s) detailing all areas of the project where qualifying heat island mitigation practices are implemented
- A minimum of 3 photographs detailing each unique qualifying heat island mitigation practice that are used on site
