Strategy Requirements
Include a minimum of one grocery store and/or food market that:
- is located within 1/2 mile or 800 meters walking distance of all regularly occupied buildings
- meets the following:
- is a minimum of 6,000 sq feet of retail space to a general line of food and nonfood grocery products
- dedicates a minimum of 3,000 sq feet of retail space to a general line of food products
- dedicates a minimum of 2,000 sq feet of retail space to the perishable foods
- dedicates a minimum of 500 sq feet of retail space to fresh produce
- ensures local grocery stores, food markets, and delivery services accept government food subsidies or subsidize the purchase of fresh produce with food assistance initiatives
General line food products intended for home preparation and consumption include:
- canned goods
- dry goods
- frozen foods
- bread and/or bakery items
- perishable foods
- dairy, eggs, and/or cheese
- fresh meats, poultry, and/or seafood
- fresh produce
Alternative Compliance
Identify a qualifying grocery store and/or food market as described above that is within 1/2 mile or 800 meters walking distance of a minimum of 51% of all regularly occupied buildings.
Design Certification
Submit all of the following:
- Annotated map(s) or plan(s) detailing the following:
- the location(s) of the planned or existing qualifying grocery store(s) and/or food market(s)
- the location(s) of all buildings that will be regularly occupied
- the distance between the qualifying grocery store(s) and/or food market(s) from all regularly occupied buildings
- An official document detailing how the existing or planned grocery store will meet the required criteria
Note: The distances between qualifying grocery store and/or food market from all regularly occupied buildings can be measured by:
- Identify the main entrance of the furthest regularly occupied building (A) from any one grocery store/food market (B)
- Mark the pedestrian route and distance between A and B

- the location(s) of the qualifying grocery store(s) and/or food market(s)
- the location(s) of all buildings regularly occupied
- the distance between the qualifying grocery store(s) and/or food market(s) from all regularly occupied buildings
- An official document detailing how the existing or planned grocery store will meet the required criteria
- A minimum of 3 annotated photographs showing the qualifying grocery store(s) and/or food market(s)
