Universally accessible restrooms support the use of open space for occupants and visitors regardless of age or ability.
Strategy Requirements
Include a minimum of one public restroom that:
- is located within 1/4 mile or 400 meters walking distance of an on-site public open space
- is identified through directional wayfinding at the public open space that shows distance and directions to the public restroom
- is free of charge for all users
- meets one of the following requirements:
- The current Americans with Disabilities(ADA) requirements in regards to toilet facilities
- ISO 21542: 2011 requirements for Building Construction, Accessibility, and Usability of the Building Environment in regards to toilet rooms and sanitary rooms
Design Certification
Submit all of the following:
- Annotated map(s) or plan(s) showing the existing or planned location of all the following:
- the on-site open space(s) that will be open to the public
- a minimum of one qualifying public restroom
- the directional wayfinding
- Design drawings detailing the design of the directional wayfinding
- An official or draft statement confirming that the public restroom will be accessible and free of charge to regular occupants and the general public
Built Certification
Submit all of the following:
- Annotated map(s) or plan(s) showing the location of all the following:
- the on-site open space(s) that is open to the public
- a minimum of one qualifying public restroom
- the directional wayfinding
- Design drawings detailing the design and location of the directional wayfinding
- An official statement confirming:
- the qualifying standard used for each unique type of water supply provided
- that the public restroom is accessible and free of charge to regular occupants and the general public
