Promoting healthier food options supports consumption of healthy foods and beverages and improved eating habits.
Strategy Requirements
Prioritize healthy prepared food retail options through all of the following:
- Develop educational materials promoting the health benefits of healthy food and beverage selection
- Identify a minimum of two prepared food outlets that meet all of the following criteria
- are located within the project boundary or within a 1/2 mile (800 meters) walking route of the project boundary
- offer a minimum of 3 non-fried vegetable options daily. Vegetables can be fresh, frozen, or canned. Served cooked or raw
- offer a variety of non-friend protein foods, such as seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, legumes (beans and peas), nuts, seeds, and soy products, daily, with a minimum of 75% of all protein foods offered non-fried
- offer protein foods from plants, such as legumes, nuts, seeds, and soy products, a minimum of 3 times per week
- if seafood and meats are offered, offer seafood a minimum of 2 times a week
- if dessert is offered, a minimum of one fruit option with no added sugars is available daily (fruit can be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried)
- Share educational material and the location of healthy food options with regular occupants through a minimum of 2 of the following:
- community information board(s)
- a digital platform such as a website, digital application, or display screen in common areas
- posters or a display at a location that is regularly visible to all occupants

Design Certification
Submit all of the following:
- The official or draft of the educational materials promoting healthy food and beverage selection
- Annotated map(s) identifying the existing or planned location of a minimum of 2 qualifying prepared food outlet(s)
- An official statement detailing how the educational materials and locations of healthy food options will be shared with regular occupants
Built Certification
- A copy of the educational materials promoting healthy food and beverage selection
- Annotated map(s) identifying the location of a minimum of 2 qualifying prepared food outlet(s)
- Anootated food outlet menus demonstrating how they meet the required criteria
- An official statement detailing how the educational materials and locations of healthy food options are shared with regular occupants
